Pula Audio ARC: A Budget V-Shaped IEM Done Right?

  • Engaging yet fairly balanced V-shaped tuning
  • Impactful yet snappy bass response
  • Clean lower midrange without being overly recessed

  • Sparkly and energetic treble presentation
  • Pretty decent detail retrieval and speed for the price

  • Not exactly the most neutral or balanced sounding IEM
  • Bass can sound a little overpowering
  • Treble can be slightly fatiguing

Drivability
  • Very easy to drive.
  • Even a basic dongle DAC has more than enough power to get the most out of it.

    • The stock cable feels rather thin and cheap, but serviceable. 
  • 3 pairs of silicone ear tips
    • The included ear tips don't provide a very good fit for me and I ended up swapping them immediately.







Build Quality
  • Resin shell paired with a metal faceplate.
  • The resin shell feels fairly solid considering the asking price.
  • The metal faceplate does feel a little cheap to the touch but overall build quality is still pretty decent for around $20.

Fit
  • Overall fit is fairly comfortable.
  • No venting issues during my usage.
  • Fit is quite dependent on the ear tip stem length.
    • Too short or too long didn't seal particularly well for me.
    • Medium stem ear tips such as the KBear 07 worked the best.

Tonality

  • Engaging V-shaped.

Bass
  • Fairly balanced between sub bass and mid bass.
  • Has a satisfying amount of slam and punch without sounding overly bloated.
  • Bass is quite snappy and doesn't linger for too long.
  • Texture is surprisingly decent for the asking price.
  • Control is pretty respectable and bass bleed is kept to a minimum.
  • It can become a little overpowering on bass-heavy tracks, but for the most part I find it quite enjoyable.

Midrange
  • Lower Midrange
    • Quite clean but doesn't sound overly recessed.
    • Male vocals still have enough body and note weight to sound fairly natural.
    • The bass generally doesn't overwhelm the lower midrange.
  • Upper Midrange
    • Forward, lively and clear.
    • Female vocals are energetic and engaging.
    • Doesn't really sound shouty to me.
    • Can become just a little spicy at louder listening volumes if you're sensitive to upper mids.

Treble
  • Treble is energetic with a nice amount of sparkle.
  • Good extension and enough air to keep the presentation lively.
  • Can be a little fatiguing and peaky sometimes.
  • Overall I still think it complements the tuning quite nicely and keeps the presentation exciting.

Technicalities / Others

  • Detail retrieval and resolution are good for the price
  • Imaging is accurate enough for both music and casual gaming.
  • Separation is surprisingly clean despite the boosted bass response.
  • Soundstage is about average with decent width but nothing particularly expansive.
  • Timbre is surprisingly natural overall despite the somewhat V-shaped signature


Conclusion

  • Overall, I think the Pula Audio ARC is a pretty decent offering around the $20 price point.
  • It occupies quite a nice spot in today's market, offering a tuning that is more engaging than neutral/balanced without becoming a full-on deep V-shaped set.
  • The accessories are a little disappointing, and I would still highly recommend swapping the stock cable and ear tips, even as a daily beater.
  • Once that's done, I think the ARC is a very enjoyable budget IEM that's easy to recommend.
